KitchenAid vs. Bosch

KitchenAid is a well-known and respected name with an excellent reputation for their stand mixers, and Bosch is also a well- known name, so which one should you purchase? When choosing a stand mixer, it’s important to compare the ease of use, features, and the overall functionality. Here, we will compare the Bosch Universal Plus Kitchen Machine to the KitchenAid Professional 600 stand mixer.

Power and Speed

The KitchenAid Professional 600 stand mixer has a 575-watt motor and 10 speeds.  The Bosch has 800 watts of power, yet only offers only 4 speeds, plus a momentary switch for pulse operation.

Capacity

The Kitchen Aid Professional 600 includes a 6-quart stainless steel mixing bowl with a contoured handle.  This serious stand mixer can mix up to 14 cups of flour dough for up to nine dozen cookies at a time, or enough dough for 4 loaves of bread, and can mix 8 pounds of mashed potatoes. This mixer has received perfect scores for whisking egg whites, mixing cake batter and kneading pizza dough.

The Bosch Universal Plus Kitchen Machine has a 6.5 quart plastic mixing bowl. While a stainless steel bowl can be purchased separately, it is quite costly, around $150.00. This mixer can mix up to 18 cups of flour, enough to make six, 2-pound loaves of whole wheat bread or 10 dozen cookies. The Bosch Universal Kitchen Mixer has a large cylindrical shaft in the middle of the bowl, making it slightly harder to remove contents from the bowl, and also more difficult to clean.

Size, Appearance and Accessories

The Kitchen Professional 600 stand mixer is available in 11 beautiful color choices to match practically any decor, and includes a wire whip, burnished flat beater, spiral dough hook, and pouring shield. The mixer measures 16.5” high x11.3” wide x14.6” deep, and is backed by a one-year warranty.  Many optional attachments can be purchased to use with the mixer, including:

Summary

The KitchenAid Professional 600 Series Stand has earned solid reviews from owners. More than 1,200 owners give it an overall rating of 4.3 stars at Amazon.com. At Cooking.com, 147 reviewers give it an average rating of 4.8 stars.  The Bosch Universal Kitchen Machine has received an average rating of 4.5 from 22 reviewers at Amazon.com.  While this rating is slightly higher than KitchenAid, there are many less reviews, making it impossible to get a true comparison from the product ratings.

It has been noted that while the KitchenAid Professional 600 stand mixer does not perform as well on very large batches, it outperforms Bosch for making cookies.  Most users, however have found the KitchenAid mixer’s style of mixing bowl  much simpler to clean.

Both the KitchenAid Professional 600 and the Bosch Universal Kitchen Machine are high-quality mixers and the price of both mixers is comparable, but if you prefer a stainless steel bowl over plastic, you’ll have to  purchase it separately with the Bosch, adding an extra $150 or so on to the cost. When deciding which to purchase, consider overall functionality (optional attachments, etc.), ease of use, capacity, ease of clean up, as well as size and appearance.
