Cuisinart Mixer vs. KitchenAid mixer

Both Cuisinart and KitchenAid have an excellent reputation when it comes to kitchen appliances, and with the holiday season quickly approaching, a high-quality stand mixer would certainly come in handy; but, trying to decide on which mixer to purchase may have your head spinning as fast a mixer bowl!  Let’s compare two high-quality, heavy duty stand mixer models: the Cuisinart SM55 and the KitchenAid Professional 600.

Power

The KitchenAid Professional 600 stand mixer has a 575 watt motor with 10 speeds which allows you to mix up practically anything you desire.  The mixer has a Soft Start feature to prevent splattering of ingredients, and an electronic speed sensor that adjusts the speed when necessary.   While 575 watts is a lot of power, Cuisinart’s SM55 stand mixer features a whopping 800 watt motor, and while that’s a great feature when you are mixing very thick, heavy , 800 watts isn’t really necessary for most, everyday mixing tasks.  Here, the best choice depends on your baking needs.

Bowl Capacity

The KitchenAid Professional 600 mixer comes with a 6 quart, stainless steel bowl, with an ergonomically designed handle, which allows  for easing removal of the bowl.  This 6 quart bowl can mix up to 14 cups of flour at one time, meaning you can mix enough dough for 8 loaves of bread or 13 dozen cookies in a single bowl.  The Cuisinart SM-55 offers a 5.5 quart stainless steel bowl, also with a handle.  The placement and design of the handle on the KitchenAid mixer makes it easier to remove the bowl from the mixer.  With the larger bowl and great handle design, KitchenAid wins in this category.

Attachments

The Cuisinart SM55 comes with a chef’s whisk, flat mixing paddle and dough hook. The KitchenAid mixer includes a flat beater, dough hook, and wire whip, as well as a splash guard shield. One of the great things about these two stand mixers is that you can purchase a variety of other attachments, such as meat grinders, slicers and pasta makers, making your mixer a true multi-tasker. Both mixers have an assortment of attachments, however, KitchenAid goes has the largest variety of pasta attachments, such as  a ravioli maker, pasta sheet roller, fettuccini cutter, angel hair cutter and thick noodle cutter.  KitchenAid also offers a vegetable/fruit strainer, shredder, food grinder, ice cream maker attachment, citrus juicer and sausage stuffer.  The Cuisinart offers a pasta maker, a meat grinder and a citrus juicer.  Cuisinart does have a few attachments that KitchenAid does no, including a 3 cup food processor attachment and a 40-oz glass blender attachment.  Consider they types of attachments you would like with your mixer.  If you plan to use your mixer for pasta, the KitchenAid has a great attachment selection.

Extra Features

Cuisinart and KitchenAid both include an auto-off feature, to automatically shut down the mixer if overloaded, so as not to damage any of the gears or the motor itself.  The KitchenAid Pro 600 stand mixer has planetary mixing, meaning the beater hits 67 points in the bowl; the beater spins clockwise and the shaft spins counterclockwise, ensuring a thorough mix of ingredients.  Cuisinart SM55 features a 15 minute countdown timer and 3 power outlets. The KitchenAid machine does have a bowl lift option with their Pro 600 model whereas the Cuisinart has a tilt head.  We feel that both models have some unique and handy features of their own.

Colors

The KitchenAid Professional 600 stand mixer comes in eleven fun colors, to match practically any décor. Cuisinart SM55 is available in Stainless Steel, Black or White.  If you want a beautiful accessory on your kitchen counter, KitchenAid is the winner.
